Introducing the Howdy Team

4462120219_9cc1796f9c_o.jpg

Howdy!

My name is Chaney Miller '18 and I am so excited to introduce a brand new part of the New York Aggies, the Howdy Team! At every event we will have a handful of Howdy Team members focused on connecting Aggies with other Aggies across our incredible New York network.  Our goal as Howdy Team members is to help improve club engagement and make sure every Aggie, new or old, feels welcomed and included. As someone who just moved to the Big Apple a few months ago, I know how daunting this can be, but I also know how awesome this Club can be in connecting the dots and making new Aggies feel welcome.

This is a great way to get more involved with the NY Aggie Club without the full time commitment of being an Officer.   If you’re interested in joining and want to help Aggies feel at home here in NYC, you can send an email to howdy@newyorkaggies.com and I'll make sure to get you signed up!

Thanks and Gig 'Em,

Chaney Miller '18 - Howdy Team Chair - New York Aggies

17426083_10110191021493114_4220285098809175798_n.jpg

Howdy!

My name is Meg King '14 and I am proud to be serving as this year's VP of Membership for the Club! As you know, Aggies are big on tradition, and one of our biggest jobs is keeping the spirit of Aggieland alive here in New York City. We put our left-feet-over-right to sing the War Hymn, honor fallen Aggies at Muster every 21st of April, and wear our class rings proudly despite our co-workers' confusion. That said, we're starting a new tradition! This year the New York Aggie Membership schedule is changing (ssss!) in order to make it easier on the officer team and YOU (whoop!).

Moving forward, Memberships will begin and expire in August for everyone. If you renew your Membership today, it will be good until August 2019! We will be honoring all Memberships bought in June and July 2018. If you have any questions about your Membership status, please reach out to me at membership@newyorkaggies.com

If you haven't paid your membership in the past couple months, then that means you can be amongst the first to jump back in for this year of New York Aggie Membership.  Why become a member? Great question, here are just a few of the wonderful answers:

  • Represent the Aggie Network in the Big Apple!
  • Discounts to New York Aggie events
  • Exclusive Football Season Drink Specials only available to official members- (our new game watch bar is enforcing this big time this year!)

You've got two options to join up:

  • Individual Member - $35.00 HERE
  • OR get your Membership and New York Aggie's t-shirt for $45.00 HERE

It is now easier than ever: just go to our website and three clicks later, you're signed up until August 2019!

Thanks and Gig 'Em!

Howdy Ags,
How is it already August? This summer has flown past! But that means it is almost Fight Texas Aggie Football Season and I personally can't wait to see Jimbo and this team make a run at the greatness they've been talking about all offseason. Speaking of which, do you have the first game watch on your calendar? Scroll down to get some of the details you need to know with more to come soon.
As we transition from summer to football season, we are also transitioning to a new group of officers this Thursday at our Howdy Hour. We'll be sending out a note with the slate of candidates on Wednesday so you have a chance to get to know some of the new leaders of our Club ahead of elections. But, I want to say as my time as President comes to a close, I was completely blown away by how many new hands raised when we asked if anyone would be interested in getting more involved in the Club in the new officer year. We have so many amazing people in our Club and so many who are as committed to the continued growth and national dominance of our Club (looking at you Houston and Dallas - step up!)
We have some amazing announcements to make about Membership and the Game Watch Parties in the coming weeks in addition to who our new officers are, so be sure to be on the look out for our next mid-month newsletter!

There's a Spirit That Can Ne'er Be Told,
Andy Ellwood '04

What Muster Means to Me

This post was written by New York Aggies' 2015-2016 Scholarship recipient, Bryce Barros '17.  A native of the Tri-State Area, Bryce studied International Affairs at The Bush School.

I first learned of Muster not through my fellow Aggies, but from a friend of mine that graduated from The Citadel. Prior to attending Texas A&M University for my Master’s degree, I was living in Taipei, Taiwan, spending most of my time with other Senior Military College grads from my own Alma Mater, Norwich University, as well as The Citadel, Virginia Military Institute, and Virginia Tech. One day in passing, my Citadel graduate friend told me he was going to Muster. So naturally, as a Norwich grad, I asked him “What is Muster?” He explained to me that Muster was a tradition that was started in the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets for all students and graduates to gather in one place remember those who passed away in over the year, and to serve as a reminder that they have each other’s backs. He further explained that the tradition came to The Citadel because they had a cadet exchange program with Texas A&M. Citadel cadets that went to Aggieland for a semester brought the tradition back with them. At the time, I had no idea that I would become an Aggie or attend the Bush School of Government & Public Service at Texas A&M University.

A year later, following my acceptance to attend the Bush School, I was invited by the Taiwan Aggie Club to go to Muster. Although I did not attend because I delayed my matriculation by another year, I was reminded of tradition that it invoked. This became very apparent to me while visiting a former WWII POW camp in Northern Taiwan called Kinkaseki (Jinguashi). This town was a Gold Mine that the Japanese used American, British and Commonwealth, and Dutch POWs captured in the fall of the Philippines, Singapore, Malaya, Java, and Hong Kong to mine. My old Taiwanese host family grew up near this rural village/POW camp. I was surprised to find that this camp may have held Aggies too.

Muster ran through my head while visiting Manila in 2015. That year, I knew the theme of Muster was Corregidor Island. I remember flying over Manila Bay and thinking to myself the hardships that those Aggies faced while held in Japanese captivity.  All the Aggies I had met in Taiwan emphasized that Muster was such an important tradition that Aggies held as POWs made sure to hold it. I was moved with tears as I saw Corregidor Island and the large Filipino Navy base that currently occupies it.

However, despite this all, I came to realize the true importance of Muster and the Aggie Family from the NY Aggies. Throughout my time in Aggieland, this club has supported me financially, professionally, and personally to this day. The NY Aggies have truly become not just a group of Scholarship Benefactors 1500+ miles away in NYC while I was in College Station, but a family that has helped me immensely, both professionally and personally. Through the last three years I have been a student at Texas A&M, this club taught me that Muster means having a strong extended Aggie family to rely on, honoring those who came before us and past away over the last year, and forging a future for future Aggies. As Aggies, paying it forward a big part of our traditions, but to do that, we have to recognize those who have passed over the last year to properly reflect on our future.

Announcing the Hullabaloo Breakfast

Part of being such a fast growing and diverse Club is testing and trying new things together. This month, we're going to kick off our first in a series of morning networking breakfasts as a way to be intentional about getting to know other Aggies in a professional way here in New York City.

There are only going to be 12 tickets available for this pre-fixe breakfast to make sure we keep ourselves to one table and everyone in attendance has the chance to meet each other. But, if we find out that there is more interest in this kind of event at this time of day, we'll look to grow the venue and number of seats.

For all the details and to buy your tickets, GO HERE

If you'd like to come in the future, but can't make it work this month, email president@newyorkaggies.com to be added to the Hullabaloo Breakfast mailing list and be the first to find out when and where the next one will be.

Howdy Ags,
What an amazing time to be a New York Aggie. From our University climbing in the national ranks across the board in academics and athletics, to having the #1 NFL Draft Pick in representing the maroon and white, to spending and incredible evening together last month at Aggie Muster with Coach Kevin Sumlin - we're excited to have you all as a part of this community.

For those of you that have recently joined or gotten to know us better, we are thrilled to welcome you to a very fun moment in the New York Aggie's history. Growing faster than we ever have before, we are seeing more and more people stepping up and leaning in to make this a Club that we now know has the attention of the Association of Former Students as what Club's in the future can become.  (And sometimes we make the front page of the Battalion)

This past month really gave us all the chance to see how many people are excited about what we are doing and we have so many people to thank, especially Coach Sumlin and Jacob Green for coming up and being our Muster speakers. We'd also like to thank the team at Webster Hall and Franco Vitella Catered Affairs for an incredible venue and menu, and our very own Shantanu Bansal for being our event photographer and capturing so many great moments, some of which were featured in The Eagle newspaper! (did you get some good pics that night? email them to goodbull@newyorkaggies.com.)

We've got a busy summer coming up, get out your calendar and make sure you come play with the New York Aggies as much as you can.

New York Aggie Muster

Over 150 Aggies gathered at the historic Webster Hall in New York City last Friday, April 21st, to celebrate one the Aggie family's most special traditions, Aggie Muster. Muster is about coming together as Aggies to honor and celebrate the past, present, and future of the Aggie family. It is about something bigger than ourselves; it's about that indescribably strong Aggie spirit that transcends our individual lives. As they say,  "From the outside looking in, you can't understand it. And from the inside looking out, you can't explain it." We are proud to say that this Muster was the largest in club history, and one of the largest Musters outside of Texas.

This year, we were honored to have two incredible guests join us, Head Coach of our beloved Aggie football team, Kevin Sumlin, and 12th Man Foundation VP of Major Gifts and Endowments (not to mention 3 time Super Bowl champion), Jacob Green.

We want to extend a special thank you to the families of those on our Roll Call - thank you for joining us to honor your loved ones.

Thank you to this year's sponsors that made our incredible Muster possible:

Coach's Sponsors: Aggies on Wall Street, Mike Shaw Automotive, Dennis Simmons '72, Alan Mitchell '85, Craig Jeffers '98, and Marc Wolf '00

Ceremony Sponsors: Sententia Capital Management, Felicia Medina ‘00, Bret McGowen ‘03, Shantanu Bansal ‘16, and Alex Lambros ’17

And last but not least, thank you to each and every Aggie that joined us. We were honored to Muster with you.

Softly call the muster,
Let comrade answer, “Here!”
Their spirits hover ‘round us:
As if to bring us cheer!
Mark them “present” in our hearts,
We’ll meet some other day.
There is no Death, but Life Eterne
For heroes such as they!
— from Roll Call for the Absent by Dr. John Ashton, Class of 1906

We hope to see you soon at more NYAMC events!

April Newsletter

Howdy Ags,
When we were pulling together this month's newsletter, we realized how quickly the New York Aggies are growing and how very bright the future of this Club is. We've gotten several notes from powers at be in Aggieland asking us how our Club is so much more active, fun, and red ass than other Clubs. We've responded, "Thanks and Gig Em, but we're just getting started."

That being said, you're gonna want to pull out your calendar and make sure you don't miss any of the fun things below, especially the incredible evening that the Muster committee has planned on April 21st!

Over the past month, we've been all over the city and we want to give a huge shout out to our friends at NYCountrySwag for the Country Brunch, the Waylon for hosting our Happy Hour AND the Texas Independence Day pre-party, Shiner for being the best beer (Presidential edit) and the fun at Texas Independence Day with Bowery Presents team who pulled it all together.

Before we get to all the amazing upcoming activities, we wanted to make sure to encourage you to to check out the newest online home for the New York Aggies, LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/company/new-york-a&m-club We know a lot of y'all are thinking about what comes next in your careers and we want to make sure our Club is a resource for you there as well.

Muster ceremonies today take place on April 21st in approximately 320 locations globally.  The "Roll Call for the Absent" commemorates Aggies, alumni and current students, who died that year. 2017 New York Aggie Officers

As the largest club outside of Texas, the New York Aggies represent one of the most eclectic and welcoming clubs in the country. Started in 1969, this club has seen a lot of changes, both to Texas A&M and to New York City. But through it all, our mission hasn't changed:

To establish and maintain scholarships for needy and worthy students; to assist the community, the University and the Association in any worthy undertaking to the best of our ability as a club and as individuals; and to maintain and encourage the fraternal spirit of friendliness and helpfulness that is traditional among A&M Former Students.

At this year's Post-Holiday Party, the New York Aggies voted in the 2017 Officers and the next chapter of this historic and red ass Aggie Club began.

Serving as President is Andy Ellwood '04. Andy has lived in New York for going on 8 years and works in the startup world, helping build and grow technology companies. His is currently Cofounder and President of Basket. Andy's charge to the club at the elections this year was to make this club the most inclusive, inviting, and welcoming club in the country, not just outside of Texas. (Watch out Dallas and Houston - we're coming for you)

Serving as Executive Vice President is Ashley Powell '11. Ashley most recently served as Vice President of Activities and was responsible for some some of the most well attended and creative events in New York Aggies' history last year. Ashley works in Investor Relations for a large private equity company in New York, but is found most frequently hosting visiting Aggies and members of the club for spontaneous meet ups and impromptu yell practices.

Serving as Secretary is Dana Dunn '07. Dana is originally from San Antonio, TX and works in with Chase Bank in their home lending department here in New York City. Representing the Brooklyn constituency of the New York Aggies, Dana is a welcome new addition to this year's Officers and the reigning starting shortstop and clean up batter for the Kick 'Em Aggies, our Club's summer kickball team.

Serving as Vice President of Finance is Mike Zapata '00. Mike is returning for another tour of duty making sure the New York Aggies keep their financial house in order. His experience working in the financial markets in New York City and the discipline of being a member of the Corp of Cadets while at Texas A&M have served the club well in this role and we're excited to have him back for another year.

Serving as Vice President of Scholarships is Nate Bays '13. When it comes to passion for the New York Aggies' purpose, no one brings more passion than Nate. We are thrilled to have Nate serving again this year to help us identify and to award scholarships to worthy students in the Greater New York area on behalf of the club. When not rapping the club, Nate works in oncology research and can be found attending many live music events around NYC.

Serving as Vice President of Activities is Jordan Knesek '14. Since the day Jordan arrived in New York, she's been in the middle of activities of every kind so welcoming her to the this year's Officers was a very natural transition. Jordan previously chaired our Muster committee and might hold the record for most new New York Aggie recruits in a single year.  Jordan is all about people activities outside of the club as well working in employee development for the Fox News Channel.

If you see anyone of the Officers of the New York Aggies at an event, at a meet up, or out and about in New York City, please say Howdy. We are committed to making this huge city the friendliest and most welcoming place for Fightin' Texas Aggies and we hope you'll join us for the incredible year of good bull, red ass, hullabaloo that we are planning.

If you want to get more involved in the club and take a more active role in making the New York Aggies the best club in the country, please send a note to President@NewYorkAggies.com and we'll find a place for you to serve that works for your schedule and your interests!

Thanks and Gig 'Em!

Your 2017 Officers
